Smarter Upstarter’s Favorite Visibly_Smart Startup

So you want to build a website. No problem! Let’s start with some graphics software and begin to rough out our design. Oh, you’re not a Photoshop person? No matter, we’ll just worry about the code and get somebody else to help us with the design. You’re fluent in CSS and PHP, right? No again. I think I get it now: you want to pay someone to build a website. No problem!
Up until recently, this scenario was a fairly common experience for non-programmers interested in planting their flag on the internet frontier. Without coding chops, you simply weren’t going to get very far in your quest. But it looks like we’re finally seeing a concerted effort to address this market, as smart new products designed to empower the computer science mortals are beginning to pop up everywhere. You already know about Tumblr and Wordpress, and may have heard about Adobe’s new Muse application for building more professional sites. But my favorite tool in this growing space is the small design startup Flavors.me.
Founded by a few of the mega-minds behind Vimeo, Flavors isn’t blogging software, it’s a web-based program for building unique homepages. Instructions: upload a background image. Pick your layout, font, and color palette. Connect as many social media accounts as you like. You’ve just gone from nothing to something in almost no time at all. While functional and powerful (and free!), Flavors’ true secret ingredient is design. Their customization parameters are built to save us from ourselves, making it nearly impossible to create an ugly website. Visibly smart, indeed.
