Dumped by a Startup

Image via hundrednorth

Startups are a gamble. An entrepreneur quits their job to pursue their dream. A venture capitalist bets on the startup with a million dollar investment. New hires take a risk by joining an unproven company. But there’s somebody else in this equation who’s often overlooked: Me. As a user, letting a startup into your life is also a gamble, and this week I learned that lesson the hard way.

Summify, a social media curation service I’ve used since the beginning of Smarter Upstarter, has been acquired by Twitter, and is shutting down. No more Summify. Ever. A user at Github captured the sentiment perfectly with this sarcastic take on Summify’s ill-conceived email to users. We got dumped for someone with a fancier car. But that’s the game. Our hearts mend and we realize there are other fish in the sea, some of whom are already swimming up to take Summify’s place. Check out Percolate and News.me…when you’re ready to love again.
