The DG’s Guide to Living Without a Wallet

In the year 2050, you will no longer carry a wallet. Unfortunately, it’s the year 2012 and our wallets are as fat as ever. So how do you go about cutting back or eliminating the wallet all together?
Get rid of credit cards. Last week I talked about Square’s Card Case, an app that let’s you pay using just your name. Google Wallet allows you to carry all your credit card info on your phone and pay with it at the register.
Get rid of all the other cards. You still carrying your Blockbuster Video card around? Well, for everything else, use Keyring to organize and store your discount and membership cards.
Get rid of paper. Our wallets become filing cabinets — we keep receipts, business cards, and even trash in there. Use Bump to exchange data rather than paper cards, and an app like Shoebox to store receipts and other miscellaneous stuff.
Get rid of your ID. This is the biggest challenge. There are signs that biometric IDs are becoming more commonplace but for now, you can probably just get a phone case that can store your government issue ID with your phone.
How fat (or thin) is your wallet?
