WHAT’S UP WITH BOOKS?

Santa left me–and just about everyone else–a tablet or an e-reader under the tree this holiday. Within days, I was converted. E-books for life!

With Borders bankruptcy, Apple’s iBooks Author announcement, and the success of Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing, it was clear to me that the days of book buying and book publishing have changed for good. I was on the cusp of new technology and I was loving it. Then the rumors started swirling about Amazon retail stores. (Cue record scratch!) Wait. What?

It seems that us tech nerds are getting a little overexcited a little early. Think about it–some people don’t even own a computer yet, let alone an Internet connection. Not everyone has a cell phone, let alone a smart one. While technology can change within minutes, it takes years for it to catch on. So even though Borders went out of business, Amazon could just as easily step into its empty spaces and succeed. It’s about brand power, not technology.
