There are two kinds of people in today’s commercial air travel society: those with “status” and those without. The 1K Elite Gold Medallion whatevers among us enjoy priority boarding, seat upgrades, and free checked luggage. Non-status muggles like myself must pay extra for the privilege of baggage handling—a harsh reality I was introduced to this week when flying for the first time in forever. To avoid extra fees, you’re going to need a carry-on. Here are three that make the grade.

The Hardcase —More and more popular due to the tough outer shell and the four-wheel drive system. Cram it into that overhead bin: it’s a Samsonite.

The Baller—You may not have Platinum Status, but with a Tumi bag you’ll fool everyone into thinking you do.

The Soldier—I’ve had a Victorinox carry-on for six years now. It’s light, ergonomic, and it’s red. Plus, most damage is covered under warranty.
