3D MOVIES GET ARTSY

3D has had it rough. Sure, seeing blue aliens kind of pop out at you was cool in Avatar but how many more rehashes do we need to sit through? Fortunately, there are a two films from this past year that are both beautiful culture vulture fare and technologically satisfying.

The Cave of Forgotten Dreams. Ostensibly a nature story about ancient cave paintings, Cave is really a character study by the always titillating Werner Herzog. Herzog’s 3D use is limited to exposing the physical depth of the cave, but the net effect is a look into the beautiful and weird world of cave explorers.

Pina. Think of this gorgeous film, based on the works of the late Pina Bausch, as Step Up meets Fantasia—a visual feast with a subject matter that actually (finally) is enhanced by 3D. The opening sequence alone is worth the price of admission.
