HOW TO RUN RIGHT

How do you run? When you hop on a treadmill or head off down a trail, do you just run with whatever gate feels natural? Or do you concentrate on specific mechanics like staying on the balls of your feet? Do you wear special shoes to force those mechanics? Does it really matter? This week, WIRED Playbook’s Jeff Beckham profiled a SXSW talk by Jay Dicharry, Director of UVA’s Speed Performance Clinic. The gist is that yes, there is a right way to run.
Basically: posture matters. “Get your shoulders back, just like Mom said, but don’t arch your back. Flexibility, strength, and muscle memory are key to good form,” Beckham reports. Check out the full post here, which includes three easy exercises for improving form.
