HOW GOOGLE AND OTHERS SPENT APRIL FOOL’S DAY

Tech is one of our nation’s most vital industries. Visit a company like Google, and you’ll witness an office where solemn work is done to build the internet of tomorrow. It’s serious business, and there’s no time for fooling around. Except of course for April 1st, when Google and the entire internet spend a full 24 hours trying to top itself with April Fool’s jokes. Some highlights from yesterday’s pranks:
Google—an 8-bit version of Maps, an auto-piloted NASCAR team, and Gmail Tap—a two-button typing system based on Morse Code.
Mashable—Conan buys Mashable, hilarity ensues. Really more of a marketing ploy.
AdBlock for Safari—Perhaps my favorite gag. AdBlock changed all of the ads they normally block into cat pictures.
OMGPOP—The CEO of newly-acquired OMGPOP, makers of Draw Something, pretended to use Twitter to publicly humiliate a former employee. UPDATE: Whoops, turns out that was real.
