FOR THE LOVE OF ARCADES: DENVER’S 1-UP

This weekend in Denver, I discovered a breed of entertainment that I didn’t even know existed: the dive bar arcade. It’s an arcade and a dive bar all under one roof. I KNOW.
The 1-Up (aptly named) features all of your favorite retro machines like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Street Fighter II plus some other gems like Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker. Change machines are scattered throughout so you can gather up a fistful of quarters. The best part is that each play costs only 25 cents–just like the old days! And the only difference is that these childhood favorites are equipped with beer holders.
For those of you who know the glorious documentary King of Kong: yes, Steve Wiebe has stepped foot inside the 1-Up and dominated Donkey Kong like a boss. I attempted to walk in his footsteps and failed miserably.
