FAMOUS LUDDITES
Building upon my latest ‘Life without Facebook’ entry, I wondered if there are other great minds, besides myself, who have chosen the quieter path of a (more) analog life. Fortunately, I wasn’t alone, and found some serious creative talent who also eschew electronics.
Jonathan Franzen, author. Mr. Franzen famously hates technology. He calls social media “one big endless loop.” Possibly true, but who doesn’t like roller coasters?
Woody Allen, filmmaker. All-around raconteur Mr. Allen recently came out saying he doesn’t use email, instead using his iPhone for a much, much cooler purpose—to practice jazz.
George Clooney, actor. Mr. Clooney once said he’d rather, ahem, get a rather thorough exam than have a Facebook page. Ouch.
Ray Bradbury, author. The late sci-fi great once told Yahoo to go to hell. For some reason, this, perhaps because it comes from the man who wrote ‘Fahrenheit 451’, gives me the chills.
