BURNER APP PROTECTS YOUR DIGITS FROM STRANGERS

Most of us would sooner ride the elevator with a velociraptor than give out our phone number to some stranger or service. We have multiple email addresses for things like shopping, craigslist, and dating, so why not multiple phone numbers?

Greg Cohn, co-founder at Ad Hoc Labs, is giving us just that with their new app, Burner. “Funnily enough, we built the basic Burner concept as a feature on another app we were prototyping,” Cohn told me last week. “But, as often happens with technology, users had their own idea of what (Burners) could be used for. It was then we realized it was one of these “blank canvas” kind of concepts that had a lot of potential applications, and we knew we were on to something big.”

Just like an email alias, a Burner can point to whichever number you choose. You can even request specific area codes. When you’re done with your temporary number, simply “burn” it. Think Craigslist postings or dating services. Check it out: Burner can even solve crimes.
