HOW MUCH LIFE IS IN THE UNIVERSE? YOU DECIDE.

I’m putting on my Bill Nye bow tie for a second here to show you this amazing interactive over at the BBC. First, some background info. Chalkboard, please.

The Drake Equation is a math equation used to estimate (guestimate, really) the number of “detectable extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way Galaxy.” For such an otherworldly topic, it’s surprisingly somber in its logic. Take the number of stars in the galaxy that can support complex, intelligent life, and multiply by the chance that this intelligent life doesn’t kill itself and manages to send out a message to space. Note that some aren’t too impressed with the equation and its assumptions.

The interactive allows you to play as Cosmic Hand of Fate and adjust any of the factors in the Drake Equation. Whatever way you shape it, the Equation is still loads of fun. Think about it next time you’re on the rooftop bar and stare up at the sky.
