With great technology comes great responsibility. That’s what we need to remind ourselves as we begin to utilize the full potential of GPS, video cameras, and cell phones. Put them all together and you can get some awesome and some awesomely scary things.
Imagine if your smartphone would buzz with a coupon when you walked into your favorite store? Cool idea, right? Best Buy, Macy’s and Walmart think so. SpotZot has teamed up with a bunch of big box retailers to attract customers via geo-targeted coupons. This might creep out some people-–after all, you might as well just check in with your face.
But that’s not too far off from the FBI’s latest project. The goal of the Next Generation Identification initiative is to equip CCTV cameras around the country with advanced facial recognition technology. It’s an effort to help law enforcement reduce criminal activity and terrorism, but it’s also one step closer to Big Brother.
