The Dreaded Social Media Background Check

Even the background check just got social. But it’s not friending you. It’s telling on you. And it’s quite possibly preventing you from getting hired – anywhere!

I grew up in one of the first generations to post every inappropriate college photo and every uncensored thought online. It’s proving to be quite a serious problem, especially when it comes to job interviews.

While I don’t fear the idea of using my real name for social media accounts, and I poke fun at those who do, there are obvious benefits to hiding away in a virtual corner with a bag over your head. But even if you use a nickname for your Twitter handle, it’s still tied to your personal email account. The social media background check will find you!
